Basic TEMS (Tactical Emergency Medical Support)
This 4‑hour Basic TEMS course is designed for law enforcement personnel, security professionals, and fire/rescue first responders who may be required to operate in dynamic or austere environments and want to improve their ability to recognize and respond to life‑threatening medical emergencies until additional medical support arrives.
This condensed course introduces core injury recognition, threat‑aware response concepts, and basic life‑saving first aid techniques commonly applied in tactical or austere settings. The training emphasizes situational awareness, decision‑making, and immediate care priorities appropriate for responders.
Key topics include:
Threat‑based care concepts and personal safety considerations
Phases of care in dynamic environments (direct and indirect threat conditions)
Hemorrhage control using tourniquets, wound packing, and pressure dressings
Recognition and support of airway and breathing emergencies, including recovery positioning and chest seal application
Basic casualty movement and evacuation considerations in a tactical setting
This fast‑paced, hands‑on course blends focused classroom instruction with practical skill stations and scenario‑based exercises to reinforce first aid skills and confidence under stress.
This course teaches emergency first aid and situational response skills only and is intended to support immediate intervention until additional medical resources are available.
It does not confer medical certification or authorize the practice of medicine and is intended to be performed within the responder’s existing scope of practice, agency policy, and local protocol.
No prior medical experience is required.
A certificate of completion is provided.
This course is instructed by a MBFTE-approved instructor and may be eligible for reimbursement for Minnesota fire departments.
MN Law Enforcement POST board approved for 4 CE hours.
